In the story "to the gallows" I couldn't find anything online to corroborate the story, though I did find a mention of it in The Daily Intelligencer from Doylestown PA Feb 26, 1973 titled "I murdered, I am the one who should hang" Apparently the paper only learned of the story because someone sent a clipping of this tale from Ripley's to a relative in Doylestown PA.

    Sometimes the origins of ghost stories or tall tales have their roots in imagination rather than reality.

  2. Its really great that you did the research. I always wondered about the "Believe It Or Not" Stories but assumed that they had an element of truth to them. Great job on your part!
