Was the writer Leo Dorfman perhaps? I got the Showcase Presents Ghosts collection and this reads pretty similar. I have read he worked for both Gold Key and DC.
The Gold Key stuff is starting to grow on me, the art especially. Though I like the straighter artists, too, I look forward to the Jack Sparling ones the most. His stuff keeps the issues from being too much of the same thing.
No credits to the writers sadly. I love Sparing's work now. I used to hate it. It's so loose sometimes and a bit sloppy but as you said, it's an acquired taste.
The Gold Key's were books I never bought in the past preferring the Warren, Marvel or DC horror books. But I enjoy them now. Same with the Charlton's. I would sometimes get the Charlton books for Newton, Ditko or Sutton art.
